Mississippi Silicon celebrates opening, will hire 200 more

BURNSVILLE, Miss. — Mississippi Silicon celebrated its grand opening this week with city and state officials on hand to usher in a new era in manufacturing and rendering for the state. The new plant created 100 jobs, with plans for 100 more in the near future. The Rima Holdings USA-owned rendering facility started producing in September.

Rima is a subsidiary of Brazil-owned Rima Industrial SA, a producer of one-fourth of the world’s silicon metal. Cleantech LLC is a 20 percent stakeholder in the plant. Silicon is a versatile element, used frequently in conducters, transistors and other technological applications. You can find silicon in everything from solar cells to auto parts.

The plant will create more than 36,000 metric tons of silicon a year, and is located on the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway.
